Helen Woodward Animal Center received a desperate call from one of our rescue partners in California’s Central Valley. A one-year-old boxer blend had been found dumped on the side of a country road. She was severely emaciated, covered in scars, and struggled to eat solid food thanks to open wounds around her mouth. Without proper care, the dog would die, and our partner didn’t have the resources to treat her.
Our team drove up and got the dog as soon as we got the call. We named her Gertie, and everyone fell in love with her gentle and affectionate nature. Her initial exam revealed she had been severely abused by her previous owners, likely as a bait dog for dogfighting. They determined she’ll require weeks of round-the-clock care.
