Help Goose Get the Surgery He Needs To Survive
At less than 8 weeks old, Goose arrived at Helen Woodward Animal Center in August from an overcrowded shelter in the Midwest. Much smaller than his siblings, he struggled to gain weight and soon developed vomiting, low energy, and a lack of appetite.
The Center’s medical team immediately ran a series of tests that revealed elevated liver enzymes and abnormal bile acid levels. An ultrasound and surgical consultation confirmed that Goose has a portosystemic shunt (PSS) —an abnormal blood vessel that allows blood to bypass the liver. Without proper filtration, toxins build up in the bloodstream and can cause numerous life-threatening complications.
Surgery is essential to giving Goose the long, healthy, happy life he deserves. Without correction, PSS can cause severe neurological complications, liver failure, and a greatly shortened lifespan. Thankfully, with surgery, Goose is expected to live a full, happy life.
His next step is a CT scan to map the shunt and help surgeons plan his procedure. He will also need ongoing medical care while preparing for surgery. The total costs of Goose’s medical treatment and surgery are expected to exceed $12,000.
