Check out these radical dogs from last year's lessons and learn the lingo!

Surf San Diego like the surf dogs do. Teach your dog to hang eight!

Surfing and SUPing with your dog are terrific ways to enjoy San Diego summers! Helen Woodward Animal Center's lessons will have you and your dog in the water making lasting memories.

Register by picking a date and time in the upper right corner.  If the date and time you would like to sign up for does not show, that means we are SOLD OUT! Please contact LishaB@animalcenter.org to get on a waitlist.

GromMUTT Dog Surf Lesson (50 mins. $45) Learn to teach your dog how to surf with passionate, experienced dog surfers from the SoCal Surf Dogs Club. After 20 minutes of group learning on land, you and you dog will be paired up with a SoCal Surf Dogs instructor to try out the waves. You’ll be learning basic and advanced techniques to teach your dog how to surf, so be ready to get in the water! San Diego Pet Training will also be on hand for guidance.

There will be a maximum of 10 dogs in each class.  Registration will be closed either when the max of 10 dogs is reached, or when all available instructors are reserved.  50-MINUTE SURF CLASSES START AT 10AM, 11AM & 12PM.

Lesson includes: use of a surfboard, canine life vest, instruction by a SoCal Surf Dogs member, and volunteers to help retrieve your dog and board. If you prefer to bring your own surfboard, be sure that it is soft and there are no fins.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding (70 mins. $45) Learn stand up paddle boarding with your dog from experienced SoCal SUP Dogs instructors. After ten minutes learning on land, you’ll head out into the channel for a twenty minute solo orientation on the board (volunteers will watch your pup). Then you and your dog will do a ten minute on-land orientation with the board before heading out for thirty minutes of SUPing together, under the direction of your instructor. San Diego Pet Training will also be on hand for guidance.

Lesson includes: use of a stand up paddle board, canine and human life vests, and instruction. If you prefer to use your own board, it must be a stand up paddle board, not surf board. There will be a maximum of 7 dogs in each class, and they’ll fill up fast, so REGISTER TODAY! 70-MINUTE SUP CLASSES START AT 8:30AM.

Each dog must be accompanied by an adult (16+) at all times. Recommended age for participating dogs is at least 9 months.  You must be able to swim and your dog must like water, be able to sit, stay, and come when called for these activities.

If you are signing up for two or more lessons, we discourage you from signing up for two consecutive sessions with the same dog. We want you and your four-legged friend to get the most out of this training, and most dogs just don’t have the attention span of two hours.

Enrollment in our Surf classes is limited and is offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  We are happy to offer a refund on classes if requested via email, at least one week in advance of the class date.  Due to the typically full class schedule, we are unable to offer refunds after that time, on missed classes, or classes that are already in progress.

For the safety of all involved—dogs, owners, volunteers, etc.—it is important that all canine participants be well socialized to both dogs and people.  Dogs with dominance and/or fear issues may be overwhelmed and create a safety risk to themselves or those around them. Please be aware that your dog will be handled by multiple volunteers and be in close proximity to other dogs.  If you have any concerns or questions regarding your dog's behavior and whether this activity is appropriate, please contact San Diego Pet Training at info@sdpettraining.com.

A natural part of California beaches is local sea life, including stingrays.  Help protect yourself by wearing water shoes, and always remember to shuffle your feet while in the water.
