FAMILY AND DOG-FRIENDLY BEACH DAY
Friends, families, and pups come together for a day of sun, surf, and fun, all to benefit the animals and programs at Helen Woodward Animal Center! Hunker down on the beach for the day to watch more than 80 gromMUTTS and surFURS compete for the title of “Top Surf Dog.” The Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon begins at 8:30am, October 2nd, 2016, at Dog Beach in Del Mar. Spectators are welcome to come enjoy the dog surfing competition as well as interactive vendor booths, food, a doggy costume contest, dog agility course, live music, opportunity drawings, and summer fun!
Dogs, with help from their human parents, participate in 10-minute heats based on weight class. Each dog is judged on their ability to ride the waves, stay on the board, and fun-factor. There are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners for each weight class and the 1st place winner moves on to the finals--Best In Surf.
This year's activities will also feature a freestyle surf contest where points are awarded for creativity! Dogs can surf on the same board as their friends, or favorite human. Tandem rides, tricks, and costumes will catch the public and the judges' eyes!
Be sure to "like" our Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon Facebook page for the latest details and information, and don't forget to tag #SurfDogSurfAThon on social media!
Contestants will participate in 10 minute heats based on weight class and are judged on length of ride, size of wave ridden, catching a critical part of the wave (swell area—green part before it breaks and becomes white), and maneuvers (walking on the board, turns on the wave, hanging 20, kick outs, barking...always a plus!). Extra points will be awarded for dogs that stand on the board (not sitting or lying down), have a confident attitude, and are wave-ready!
Each dog that participates gets a goodie bag, not to mention tons of great prizes for the winners!
Scoring is done on a 1-10 scale and 6 wave maximum, with the top 2 waves counted for the final score. All heats in a weight class will be counted as one (example: all small dogs compete against each other, regardless of whether they’re in small dog heat #1, #2, or #3). First place winners from each weight class will move on to the finals—Best in Surf!
Weight Classes: Small Dog Heats= 1-20 pounds, Medium Dog Heats= 21-40 pounds, Large Dog Heats= 41-60 pounds, X-Large Dog Heats= 61 pounds or more
Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each weight class will be awarded medals and the top three finalists in Best in Surf will receive a hand-crafted wooden surf board trophy. May the best Surf Dog win!
A limited number of boards will be available for rent for $15. Life vests will be available for rent for $5.
*We ask that all participating dogs have previous surf experience*
Lot parking is available for spectators at the corner of Border Ave./Via De La Valle and Hwy. 101/Camino Del Mar for a $12 donation. Street parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, per normal Del Mar regulations. Contestants will be issued a complimentary parking pass.
